Starting your wreath-making journey is exciting, but like any new skill, it comes with a learning curve. If you’ve ever struggled with getting your wreath to look full, keeping decorations secure, or making bows that hold their shape, don’t worry—you’re not alone!

In this guide, I’m sharing five of the most common Beginner Wreath Maker Mistakes and how to fix them, so you can start creating beautiful, professional-looking wreaths with confidence.

How to Start Making Wreaths: 5 Common Mistakes Beginners Make

Five Beginner Wreath Maker Mistakes

1. Not Using Enough Greenery

🌿 The Mistake: One of the most common mistakes I see is wreaths that look too sparse or unfinished because they don’t have enough greenery. Greenery is what gives your wreath fullness, texture, and a professional look.

How to Fix It:
Start with a base layer of greenery before adding flowers and decorations.
✔ Use a mix of different types of greenery to create depth and dimension.
✔ Always fluff out faux greenery stems before placing them to make them look more natural.

2. Poor Floral Placement (Unbalanced Designs)

🌸 The Mistake: Have you ever stepped back from your wreath and realized the flowers look uneven or thrown together? This happens when florals aren’t placed with balance and spacing in mind.

How to Fix It:
✔ Use the Rule of Three—group flowers in odd numbers for a more natural look.
Spread larger flowers evenly throughout the wreath to avoid heavy, lopsided areas.
Step back and check your wreath’s shape from different angles before gluing anything down.

Pro Tip: Take a picture of your wreath—it’s easier to see if something looks “off” when looking at a photo!

3. Choosing the Wrong Ribbon for Bows

🎀 The Mistake: Using cheap, flimsy ribbon that won’t hold its shape or coordinate well with the rest of your wreath.

How to Fix It:
Always use wired ribbon—it helps bows hold their shape and stay fluffed.
Mix different ribbon widths for more depth and dimension.
✔ Stick with high-quality ribbons (Sam’s Club and Costco have great seasonal finds!).

4. Not Securing Decorations Properly

🛑 The Mistake: Decorations falling off after a few days because they weren’t attached securely enough.

How to Fix It:
✔ For grapevine wreaths, tuck stems into the vines before adding glue for extra hold.
✔ For wire wreaths, use zip ties or floral wire to secure heavy elements like signs or big bows.
Always use high-temperature glue sticks in your glue gun or glue skillet for a stronger hold.

💡 Pro Tip: If you’re making wreaths to sell, use glue AND a mechanical hold (zip ties or wire) to prevent items from falling off during shipping!

5. Forgetting to Fluff and Shape the Wreath

The Mistake: Skipping the fluffing step, which makes the wreath look flat and less professional.

How to Fix It:
✔ Fluff all wired branches on an evergreen wreath to create fullness.
✔ Bend floral stems and ribbon loops slightly to make them look more natural.
✔ Always take a final step back before finishing to see if any adjustments are needed.
