DIY Painted Pumpkin Doormat

Update an old rug with this DIY Painted Pumpkin Doormat! It’s an Easy Fall Decorating Idea perfect addition to your Fall Front Porch.

Happy First Day of Fall!

I am welcoming my favorite season and all my guests with a Painted Pumpkin Doormat!

Step One: Start with an Old Doormat

This project started with the yuckiest, most faded doormat ever. It was a gifted to us by our home’s previous owners and was the perfect candidate for a upcycled makeover.

The priority was to cover up the rug’s faded flower design. Since I wasn’t sure how {or if} this project would turn out, I grabbed the cheapest white spray paint I could get my hands on. Not only was the .98 cent spray paint difficult to spray but coverage was awful.

I should have known to start with my favorite Rust-Oleum Spray Paint. The natural coir mat still sucked up the paint but the Rust-Oleum coverage was way better. Using white spray paint definitely freshened the tired doormat.

Step Two: Create a Chevron Pattern with Tape

Next I used cheap masking tape to create a chevron pattern. My no-speaking-math-brain doesn’t do measurements every well so my pattern is not quite centered. But it did use Honey’s huge measuring tape. Kinda sorta.

A large pot lid provided a perfect circle in the middle of the mat. This is where the pumpkin will be painted.

Step Three: Start Painting!

First, I filled in the chevron pattern with navy and yellow craft paint then I added more white craft paint to the circle. Use a foam paint brush to pounce the paint into the coir mat. Buy a couple of foam brushes because this will ruin the brush.

After the white paint in the circle dried, I painted a basic pumpkin shape with orange craft paint. Once that was completely dried I added details to the pumpkin: deep red to outline the curves of the pumpkin and green for a stem and vines.

Even though the DIY Painted Pumpkin Doormat is protected under our front porch I still gave it a coat of acrylic sealer. I could just imagine our four year old, Tootsie, watering the plants and washing away all my hard work!

I love how my DIY Painted Pumpkin Doormat completes up my Fall inspired front door!

The best part about this project was how little I spent to transform a tired and faded door mat into a colorful addition to my fall decor. Less than $8 for craft paint and spray paint!

Does the crisp air have you yearning for more Fall decor?

I think I should bring you my old faded doormat and you can paint it just like yours! I’m in love with that doormat and amazed at your talents. I laugh at the idea of me free handing a pumpkin, but yours is amazing. I would have tossed that old doormat in the trash, not realizing that I could make it look like yours. Well, probably not as pretty as yours. Beautiful. Pinning.

You should make more and sell them, I’m telling ya!

Ashley, this looks so nice. I could use one just like this. My doormat has no color but plenty of yucky stuff!

Fun! I have never had a door mat before so I would have to go buy one to redo 🙂

Oh my goodness, Ashley! This doormat is amazing and so fun for this season! And to think you transformed it from that old doormat… crazy impressive!

I’ve been wanting to make a seasonal doormat recently, and I’ve got a plain doormat… so maybe I’ll follow your painting lead and do something creative with it to liven up our doorstep!
